J. F. Willumsen's family home

The house was designed by J.F. Willumsen in 1906 and built in 1907-08 as a home for the architect and his wife, the sculptor Edith Willumsen. The house can be viewed as part of Willumsen's riposte to the artistic and architectural conventions of the day.

J. F. Willumsen's family home

J.F. Willumsen was both the architect and builder of the house, which is situated in a neighbourhood of Hellerup dominated by imposing, monolithic and monumental houses.

The house was designed and built in 1906-1908 for Willumsen and his wife, the sculptor Edith Willumsen. The couple lived in the house up until 1928 (albeit only sporadically from 1916 onwards) after which they separated. Edith Willumsen continued to live at the house up until her death.

The exterior of this studio house is an imaginative reinterpretation of a medieval castle, and internally the building is laid out like a labyrinthine spiral. The house can be viewed as part of Willumsen's rejection of the artistic and architectural conventions of the day.

Current use

In acquiring the property in 2002, Realdania By & Byg helped to ensure that this striking house will continue to serve as a venue for creating art. Following a thorough renovation, the building now functions as a home and studio.
